Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro: 30oC, hot, muggy and a little cloudy.
Today, I began my day with an early morning workout at the end of Leme. As I exercised, I reflected on the changes that have occurred in Rio de Janeiro over the years. The morning was full of unexpected encounters and thoughts about my home city.
While working out, I unexpectedly saw my son-in-law, Mario, playing foot-volley at a beachside school about 10 meters away. It was a delightful surprise that reminded me of the importance of family. I am happy that my daughter has found a good man.
However, the reality of Copacabana in the summertime hit me as I continued my exercise routine. The beach is bustling but can also feel like a chaotic zoo. Sellers everywhere try to sell beach chairs, bikinis, snacks, and souvenirs. Amidst this hustle and bustle, one must remain vigilant as those with less-than-honourable intentions flock to the beach in numbers.
Reflecting on Rio de Janeiro, a city that has been my home for decades, I can’t help but acknowledge the changes it has undergone.
Rio was once a town characterized by a certain naivety, a place where the spirit of Carnival, samba, and the warmth of its people reigned supreme. The city welcomed visitors with open arms, captivating them with its natural beauty and vitality.
However, the Rio of today is not the same as the Rio of yesteryears. It has evolved, as all things do. Whether this change is better or worse is a matter of perspective. Over the past three decades, my mother has visited me here eight or nine times. On each visit, she laments that the city is worsening.
The truth is, I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know what the future holds for Rio de Janeiro. I know that this city is still undeniably beautiful with its stunning beaches, lush green mountains, and vibrant culture. I cherish every moment I spend here and am grateful to call it my home.
Change is a constant in life, and it affects everything, even the most beloved places. Rio de Janeiro may not be the same as it once was, but it still holds a special place in my heart, as I’m sure it does in the hearts of many others.
As we navigate these changes, let’s remember to embrace the beauty that remains, cherish the memories of the past, and look forward to the future with hope and optimism.
Thanks for joining me in reflecting on Rio-a genuinely unique and evolving city.
